What is the Sun Protection Factor (SPF)?
SPF is a scientific value that indicates how long sunscreens protect your skin against UVB rays. In this guide, we explain in detail the true meaning of SPF, how to choose it and how to use it correctly for skin health.
What is SPF?
In simple terms, SPF indicates how many times longer your skin will be resistant to burning compared to if you don’t apply sunscreen. So the SPF value is not directly related to the duration, but to the intensity of the protection.
How SPF Works
Sunscreens with SPF create a thin protective film on the surface of the skin. This layer prevents UV rays from reaching the skin, either by reflecting them (physical filters) or by absorbing them (chemical filters). This significantly reduces the risk of sunburn, premature aging and skin cancer.
Scientific Formula
The SPF value indicates how long it takes unprotected skin to sunburn with SPF. For example, skin that burns in 10 minutes without protection could theoretically resist the same UVB dose for 10 × 30 = 300 minutes with SPF 30.
SPF Values and Protection Ratios
Increasing the SPF value increases the protection rate, but this increase is not linear. The table below shows the UVB ray blocking rates of common SPF values:
| SPF Value | UVB Blocking Rate | Recommended Use |
|---|---|---|
| SPF 15 | ~%93 | Daily short-term exposure |
| SPF 30 | ~%97 | Daily standard protection |
| SPF 50 | ~%98 | Intense sun, outdoor activities |
| SPF 50+ | ~%98+ | Sensitive skin, high-risk environment |
The Difference Between UVA and UVB Rays
Sunlight contains ultraviolet (UV) rays of different wavelengths. There are two main types that affect the skin:
Aging Beam
It can pass through glass and clouds. It penetrates the deep layers of the skin, causing wrinkles, blemishes and premature aging. Effective throughout the year.
Burning Beam
It affects the top layer of the skin and is the main cause of sunburn and skin cancer. It intensifies in summer and at noon.
Choosing SPF According to Your Skin Type
The right SPF value depends on skin type, season and time spent in the sun. You can use the following guide as a reference:
Very Light Skin
SPF 50+ is recommended for skin that burns and freckles easily.
Light / Medium Skin
SPF 30-50 provides ideal protection for daily use.
Dark Skin
At least SPF 30 should be used, although higher natural protection is available.
Sensitive / Acne Prone
Non-comedogenic SPF 50 products with mineral filters should be preferred.
Correct Use of SPF
Apply 15-20 minutes before sun exposure
The skin needs time to absorb the product and form a protective film.
2 Apply Sufficient Amount
Approximately 2 finger sizes are recommended for the adult face and 30 ml for the body.
Refresh Every 2 Hours
Always reapply after swimming, sweating or towel contact.
Also Use in Cloudy Weather
80% of UV rays pass through clouds, protection is needed every day.
Do Not Neglect Even Indoors
UVA rays through windows can cause skin aging.
